Pronunciation

Noun

我國

  1. my country; our country

Usage notes

我國我国 (wǒguó) refers to the country with which the speaker identifies or which the speaker represents. The specific country and inclusiveness intended depends on the discourse's context and may even change even if used by the same person. Somebody who identifies with China may use the term to refer to China. Somebody who identifies with Malaysia, on the other hand, using this term may be referring to Malaysia. A Chinese-Canadian may sometimes use the term to refer to China and other times use the term to refer to Canada.

Care should be taken when using 我國我国 (wǒguó), especially when the speaker and the audience may not necessarily share a national identity, to avoid confusion or offence, especially due to the lack of clarity on whether the term is intended to include or exclude the audience.

Within mainland Chinese online discourse, the term is associated with officious, nationalist and jingoistic phrasing to the extent that it spawned the retort 你國 / 你国 (Nǐguó) ("your country") even among people with the same national identity to distinguish the officials and the well-off from everyone else and to criticise the former.
