Verb

தோன்று • (tōṉṟu) (intransitive)

  1. to occur, come to mind
    ஏதோ எனக்குத் தோன்றியது.
    ētō eṉakkut tōṉṟiyatu.
    I had an idea.
    (literally, “Something came to my mind.”)
    அதைப் பண்ணும்போது "இது தப்பு" என்று கூட உனக்குத் தோன்றாதா?
    ataip paṇṇumpōtu "itu tappu" eṉṟu kūṭa uṉakkut tōṉṟātā?
    When (you're) doing it, won't it even occur to you that it is wrong?
  2. (impersonal) to seem, feel, think
    இதில் ஏதோ தப்பு என்று தோன்றுகிறது.
    itil ētō tappu eṉṟu tōṉṟukiṟatu.
    I feel like there's something wrong with this.
    (literally, “It seems [to me] that something is wrong with this.”)
  3. to be visible
    Synonym: தெரி (teri)
  4. to appear, spring up, materialise, be formed, come into being
    Synonyms: உருவா (uruvā), உண்டா (uṇṭā)

      When a wick and a fire are joined (literally: love each other), this man is the form that will appear
  5. to be born

Usage notes

Except for senses 1 and 2, all the others are only used in Formal Tamil.
