Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *keṭu (“to perish, decay”). Cognate with Kannada ಕೆಡು (keḍu), Malayalam കെടുക (keṭuka), Telugu చెడు (ceḍu).

கெடு • (keṭu) (intransitive)

1. to be ruined, spoiled, damaged, tarnished, decayed, rotten, marred, blighted, worn out

   Synonyms: பழுதா (paḻutā), மக்கு (makku), கெட்டுப்போ (keṭṭuppō)

2. to perish; to be destroyed, annihilated

   Synonym: அழி (aḻi)

3. (colloquial) to be damned

   என்னைத் தொட்டான், அவன் கெட்டான்.

   eṉṉait toṭṭāṉ, avaṉ keṭṭāṉ.

   If he touches me, he's toast.

4. to degenerate, deteriorate, change for the worse

   Synonyms: சீரழி (cīraḻi), மோசமா (mōcamā)

5. (grammar) to be elided, dropped

Causative of the above verb. Cognate with Malayalam കെടുക്കുക (keṭukkuka).
