Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wr̥nHtáy, from Proto-Indo-European *wl̥nh₁-tóy, from the root *welh₁- (to choose). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬉 (vərəṇtē). Related to Latin volō (to wish), Proto-Slavic *volìti, and Old English willan (whence English will).

  3. to ask a person [with accusative] for [with accusative] or on behalf of [with कृते (kṛte)]
  4. to solicit anything [with accusative] from [with ablative or -तस् (-tas)]
  5. to ask or request that [with optative with or without इति (iti)]
  6. to like better than, prefer to [with ablative, rarely instrumental]
  7. to like, love (as opposed to ‘hate)
  8. to choose or pick out a person (for a boon), grant (a boon) to [with accusative]
