Related to इदम् (idám), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ís. Cognate to Old Avestan 𐬏𐬌𐬙𐬍 (ūⁱtī), Latin ita, Lithuanian it (“just like, in a manner of speaking”).

   अत्रैते नराः किमिच्छन्तीति कुतूहलेन गृहं प्रविशति।

   atraite narāḥ kimicchantīti kutūhalena gṛhaṃ praviśati.

   Out of curiosity about what these men wanted there, he enters the house.

   (literally, “'What do these men desire here?' thus, with curiosity, he enters the house.”)

     समुद्र वालुकापूर्ण उज्जानक इति स्मृतः।
     आगम्य च स दुष्टात्मा तं देशं भरतर्षभ।

     samudra vālukāpūrṇa ujjānaka iti smṛtaḥ.

     bādhate sma paraṃ śaktyā tama udaṅkāśramaṃ prabho.

     O bull of the Bharatas, that evil-minded one came to that region remembered as Ujjānaka, which was like an ocean filled with sand. And then, O lord, he began to harass with all his might that hermitage of Uttanka.
