    Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀉𑀲𑀺 (māusi), from Sanskrit मातुःष्वसृ (mātuḥṣvasṛ), from मातुः॑ (mā́tuḥ, mother's, gen.sg) + स्वसृ॑ (svásṛ, sister).[1] Cognate with Marathi मावशी (māvśī), Assamese মাহী (mahi).
