    Inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *𑀤𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (*daṭṭaï), from Proto-Middle Indo-Aryan *𑀤𑁆𑀭𑀝𑁆𑀬𑀢𑁂 (*draṭyate), from *𑀤𑁆𑀭𑀝𑁆 (*draṭ). Doublet of डाँटना (ḍā̃ṭnā, to threaten, restrain, rebuke). Compare Prakrit संदट्ट (saṃdaṭṭa), संदट्टय (saṃdaṭṭaya, touching, rubbed), with the सं- (saṃ-) prefix.
