From Proto-Indo-Iranian *gasćáti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷm̥sḱéti, a present tense formation of the root *gʷem-. Cognate with Ancient Greek βᾰ́σκω (bắskō). For different formations, see the etymology of the root. By surface analysis, ग (ga) + -च्छति (-cchati).
