From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hiś, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eys-.[1][2] Cognate with Proto-Slavic *jьskati (“to seek”), Latin aestimō (“to value, estimate”) and English ask.
