Etymology

Inherited from Old Slovak *trvať (chiefly in prefixed forms such as vytrvať, zotrvať), from Proto-Slavic *trъvati. Cognates include Slovak trvať and Carpathian Rusyn тырвати (tŷrvaty), the latter of which may have influenced the formation of тир- (tir-) from tr-.
