uroxe

Swedish

Etymology

Compound of ur (aurchochs) +‎ oxe (ox), calque of Middle Low German ūrosse (compare English aurchochs), with the prefix being the original word for the species, from younger Old Swedish ur, uhr, from Old Norse úrr, from Proto-Norse *ᚢᚱᛁᛉ (*uriʀ), from a Proto-Germanic *ūraz. The standalone form ur is archaic and no longer used standalone in practice, but does survive standalone in the rare dialectal masculine form ure m (angry bull).
