Etymology

Compound of ur (“aurchochs”) +‎ nöt (“cattle, bull”), with the prefix being the original word for the species, from younger Old Swedish ur, uhr, from Old Norse úrr, from Proto-Norse *ᚢᚱᛁᛉ (*uriʀ), from a Proto-Germanic *ūraz. The standalone form ur is archaic and no longer used standalone in practice, but does survive standalone in the rare dialectal masculine form ure m (“angry bull”).
