Etymology
From Malay teman, from Classical Malay [script needed] (teman), from Tamil தமன் (tamaṉ, “friend; relative”). Mostly displaced native kawan as the word subsequently became considered 'animalistic' to be used for humans, whence Standard Malay still uses it more often than kawan.
