From stać +‎ -nąć, a reanalysis of forms such as stanę.^[1][2] First attested in the 16th century.^[3] Compare Kashubian stanąc, Silesian stanōńć, and Slovincian stanõc.

According to Słownik frekwencyjny polszczyzny współczesnej (1990), stanąć is one of the most used words in Polish, appearing 9 times in scientific texts, 7 times in news, 5 times in essays, 36 times in fiction, and 22 times in plays, each out of a corpus of 100,000 words, totaling 79 times, making it the 817th most common word in a corpus of 500,000 words.^[4]
