Etymology

From Middle Irish ordaigid, from Old Irish ordaigidir (to order, to command),[1] from ord (order, sequence, arrangement), a learned borrowing from Latin ōrdō (order, rank). By surface analysis, ord (order) +‎ -igh. Cognate with Scottish Gaelic òrdaich and Manx oardee.
