odstaviť pf (imperfective odstavovať)

1. (transitive) to shut down, to take out of service (to stop the operation of a machine, factory, bridge, or tunnel)

   Synonyms: uzavrieť, vyradiť

   Z dôvodu generálnej opravy museli na mesiac odstaviť celý výrobný pás v automobilke. ― Due to a general overhaul, they had to shut down the entire production line at the car factory for a month.

2. (transitive) to cut off, to disconnect (to stop the supply of water, gas, or electricity, often due to non-payment or repairs)

   Synonym: uzavrieť

   Pre haváriu na hlavnom potrubí nám včera na celom sídlisku odstavili pitnú vodu. ― Due to a main pipe burst, they cut off the drinking water for the entire housing estate yesterday.

3. (transitive, cooking) to remove (from heat) (to move a pot or pan away from a stove or fire to stop cooking)

   Synonyms: odtiahnuť, odložiť

   Keď začne mlieko kypieť, okamžite ho musíte odstaviť z plameňa. ― When the milk starts to boil over, you must immediately remove it from the flame.

4. (transitive, transport) to park (to leave a vehicle in a stationary position outside of traffic lanes)

6. (transitive) to wean (to stop breastfeeding a child)

   Mladá mamička sa po konzultácii s lekárom rozhodla syna postupne odstaviť od nočného dojčenia. ― After consulting with a doctor, the young mother decided to gradually wean her son from night breastfeeding.

7. (transitive) to separate, to wean (to move animal offspring away from their mother's milk to other food)

   Synonym: odlúčiť

   Tento týždeň sme v maštali museli odstaviť čerstvo narodené teliatka od kravy. ― This week in the stable, we had to wean the newborn calves from the cow.

8. (transitive, sports) to block, to check (defensive action to prevent an opponent from reaching the puck or ball)

   Obranca ho pred bránkou šikovne odstavil telom od puku. ― The defender skillfully blocked him from the puck with his body in front of the goal.

10. (transitive, colloquial) to knock out (to cause a loss of opportunity to continue in an activity, e.g., due to injury)

    Nečakaný úraz ho nanešťastie na celú sezónu odstavil z hry o titul. ― An unexpected injury unfortunately knocked him out of the title race for the entire season.

11. (transitive, colloquial) to stop using (to cease using a specific product or item)

    Keď zistila, že má alergiu, musela ihneď odstaviť všetky parfumované krémy. ― When she found out she had an allergy, she had to immediately stop using all perfumed creams.
