    From Old Persian 𐎮𐎡𐎭𐎠 (di-i-d-a /⁠didā-⁠/, “wall, fortress”) + *-wāra.[1]

    The first part is from Proto-Iranian *dáyjah, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeyǵʰ- (“to form, knead”),[2] and the second part is from Proto-Iranian *wāra-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to watch, keep guard, cover”).
