Etymology

Heine gives no Proto-Somaloid reconstruction but compares it with Rendille nah', which Ehret derives from Proto-Cushitic *ʔann- (we), and Blažek derives from Proto-Afroasiatic *ḥinu. Compare with Proto-Semitic *niḥnu.

Cognate with Rendille nah', Baiso no, Daasanach nyiini, Oromo nuyi, Konso ino, Dirasha ennu, Bussa innoca, Afar nanu, Yaaku niini, Burji naanu, Sidamo ninke, Tsamai ine, Beja hinin.
