abstehen (irregular strong, third-person singular present steht ab, past tense stand ab, past participle abgestanden, past subjunctive stände ab or stünde ab, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. to stick out
  2. to be (some distance) apart [with von ‘from’]
  3. to desist

Usage notes

Only the auxiliary haben is used in northern and central Germany. In southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, sein is common in the vernacular and also, alternatively, in standard usage.
