Etymology
Derived from Proto-Indo-European *dyew- (“to be bright”). Cognates include Sanskrit दीव्यति (dīvyati). For meaning shift cf. *ględati (“to watch”) from Proto-Indo-European *gʰlend- (“to shine”).
