Borrowed from Medieval Latin Lotharingia, from Lōtharingus (“a member of the dynasty or of the people of King Lothair II; a Lotharing, a Lotharian”) + -ia (suffix forming country names). Doublet of Lorraine.
Lothair II inherited this land from his father Lothair I upon the partition of Middle Francia. More at Chlothar.
