Etymology

Attested as Church Slavonic Гнилꙗне (Gniljane) (1405), and later by Western travellers as Italian Ghilan (1826), French Guilan (1840), German Gilan ~ Gnilan (1868). Most likely a borrowed from Serbo-Croatian Gnjilane / Гњилане, possibly by mediation of Ottoman Turkish. The cluster /ɡɲ/ was simplified and later reborrowed into the lect of the Serbs coinhabiting the city. See the Serbo-Croatian entry for further explanation.

By Albanian sources traditionally considered a corruption of the surname of the Gjinolli family, in its non-Turkified form Gjinaj, who ruled over the area in the 18th century. This must be discarded due to historical evidence.
