Etymology
Etymology tree
Unknown. Possibly an irregular development from Sanskrit घृ॒ष्ट (ghṛṣṭá, “rubbed, crushed”). For the phonetic development, compare 𑀙𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (chuṭṭaï). For the semantics, compare Sanskrit घट्ट् (ghaṭṭ, “to rub, malign”).
Dardic cognates include Dameli gā̆ṭ- (“to want, wish”), Kalasha ghāṭ- (“to decrease, be wanting”), and Kashmiri گَٹُن (gaṭun, “to become less”).
