Prakrit

Etymology

Unknown. Possibly a denominal verb from Sanskrit घृ॒ष्ट (ghṛṣṭá, rubbed), whence perhaps also 𑀖𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (ghaṭṭaï).

Turner finds the phonetic variation evidence against this hypothesis and instead argues for substrate origin.

    Verb

    *𑀖𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (*ghŏṭṭaï) (Devanagari *घोट्टइ) (transitive) (Proto-New Indo-Aryan)[1]

    1. to rub
