Etymology
First attested in the Book of Sui as 𨈭羅 (MC *tham la), and in the History of the Northern Dynasties as 躭牟羅 (MC *dom mu la).
- 其南,海行三月有躭牟羅國,…附庸於百濟。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: c. 659 CE, Li Yanshou, History of the Northern Dynasties
- Qí nán, hǎi xíng sān yuè yǒu Dānmóuluóguó,... Fùyōng yú Bǎijì. [Pinyin]
- To its south, traveling by sea for three months, there is Domula Country, [...] a vassal of Baekje.
其南,海行三月有耽牟罗国,…附庸于百济。 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
Shortened from 耽牟羅 (MC *dom mu la, “Tanmura”); whose last two moras are ultimately borrowed from Proto-Japonic *mora (“village, settlement”), via a Japonic substratum. Compare Japanese 村 (mura, “village, settlement”) and Middle Korean 물 (mwul, “group, crowd”).
