From Old Japanese. First attested in the Nihon Shoki of 720 CE.^[1]

Derived from the tashi- element seen in たしに (tashi ni, “sufficiently; firmly; surely”) and たしない (tashinai, “difficult, agonizing; poor, lacking”) + adjective-forming suffix か (-ka).^[1]

- 1914, 夏目漱石 [Natsume Sōseki], chapter 28, in こゝろ [Kokoro], 下先生と遺書 [Sensei's Testament]:
  二(ふた)人(り)は何(なん)にも知(し)らないで、船(ふね)が一(いち)番(ばん)先(さき)へ着(つ)いた所(ところ)から上(じょう)陸(りく)したのです。たしか保(ほ)田(た)とかいいました。
  Futari wa nan ni mo shiranaide, fune ga ichiban saki e tsuita tokoro kara jōriku shita no desu. Tashika Hota to ka iimashita.
  The two of us, knowing nothing, got off the boat at the first place it made land. I think it was called Hota or something.

Usage notes

Adverbial use without the particle に (ni) is colloquial. The meaning for this usage implies a degree of doubt, and is different from the certainly, surely sense of 確(たし)かに (tashika ni) that has no such implication.
