From the ()(ぜん)(けい) (mizenkei, imperfective or incomplete form) tataka of verb (たた) (tataku, to strike) + auxiliary verb (-fu, indicating repetitive or ongoing action) → “to strike repeatedly” → “to fight”.[1][2][3]
