Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *lewǵ- (“to break off, shatter”) and in some forms from *lewg- (“to bend”). Cognate with Ancient Greek λῠγρός (lŭgrós, “mournful”), Latin lugeō whence English lugubrious; Old English lūcan (“to pluck out, pull up”), whence English louk.
