Etymology
From Old Swedish *væringer, from Old Norse væringr, from várr (“pledge, oath”) or værr (“pledge, oath”), which is cognate with Old English wǣr (“fidelity, loyalty”), + Old Norse -ingr (“suffix to form gerund noun”) or Old Norse gangi (“companion”). In the latter case cognate with Old English wærgenga.
Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk væring and Faroese væringi.
