Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تنبدوت (tanəbdut, “summer”), the feminine form of Proto-Berber *anăβdu (“summer”).

Cognate with Ghomara tanebdut (“mowing season”), Kabyle, Northern Saharan Berber, and Tarifit anebdu (“summer”), Tunisian Berber anabdu (“summer”), Zenaga tenewded (“summer”), and Tuareg tanăbdott (“hunger”).
