Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تنبدوت (tanəbdut, summer), the feminine form of Proto-Berber *anăβdu (summer).

Cognate with Ghomara tanebdut (mowing season), Kabyle, Northern Saharan Berber, and Tarifit anebdu (summer), Tunisian Berber anabdu (summer), Zenaga tenewded (summer), and Tuareg tanăbdott (hunger).
