Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تَكَرست (tagarst, “winter”), from Proto-Berber [Term?] (“cold season, winter”), the verbal noun of *ɣ-r-s (“to be cold, frozen”) (whence grs), ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *ḳ-r-s (“to be cold, to be frozen”).

Cognate with Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⴰⴳⵔⵙⵜ (tagrst, “cold season”), Zenaga tgärS (“cold season, winter”), Awjila təgirìšt, tagirîšt (“winter”), Nefusa tegrést (“winter”), Tuareg tȁjrəst (“cold season, winter”), Tunisian Berber tajrist (“winter”), and Ghadames asəǵrəs (“winter”).
