Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *leːʔ / -leːʔ (“to take”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *liʔ (“to take”). Cognate with Muong Bi lễ, Tho [Cuối Chăm] leː⁴, U lè, Riang leʔ².
Compare the Trans-Himalayan/Sino-Tibetan root that gave rise to Old Chinese 以 (OC *ləʔ) (B-S) (SV: dĩ), which might just be coincidence or indicative of deeper borrowing further back diachronically.
