Verb

abstimmen (weak, third-person singular present stimmt ab, past tense stimmte ab, past participle abgestimmt, auxiliary haben)

  1. (intransitive) to vote [with über (+ accusative) ‘on a proposal or plan’]
    Wir stimmen heute über einen neuen Namen für den Verein ab.
    We're voting on a new name for the club today.
  2. (transitive) to run something by someone, to get approval for [with mit (+ dative) ‘by/from someone’]
    Wer eher gehen muss, sollte das mit dem Chef abstimmen.
    Anyone who has to leave early should run that by the boss.
    Das war so nicht abgestimmt!
    That's not what we agreed on!
  3. (reflexive) to coordinate (matters), to get on the same page [with mit (+ dative) or plural subject]
    Wir müssen uns da abstimmen.
    We have to coordinate (on this).
    (literally, “We must coordinate us there.”)
    Er ist ab morgen im Urlaub. Er hat sich aber schon mit seinen Kollegen abgestimmt.
    He's off work starting tomorrow. He already coordinated things with his coworkers, though.

Usage notes

  • In Switzerland, an alternative strong past participle abgestummen is also in use, however this is nonstandard.
  • Though sometimes treated as such in informal speech, abstimmen and wählen are not synonymous.
    • abstimmen is used for bills and referenda: Wir stimmen über ein Gesetz ab.We vote on a new law.
    • wählen is used for people and parties: Wir wählen einen Präsidenten.We elect/vote for a president.
  • This distinction also extents to Abstimmung <> Wahl, Stimmrecht/Abstimmungsrecht <> Wahlrecht, etc.
