Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰéws-e-ti (“to hear, to listen”), from *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰews-,[1] however, no certain cognates outside of Indo-Iranian are known.[2]
