Either from Proto-Finno-Permic *waješe- (compare Komi-Permyak вежны (vežny), Udmurt воштыны (voštyny), Eastern Mari вашталташ (vaštaltaš)), or from the root *vaja- (as in *vajaga, *vajot'ak) with + *-ëh.
