Reconstruction notes
More information
- This reconstruction belongs to Late Middle Indo-Aryan because there are no Dardic descendants, no attested Prakrit or Apabhramsa terms and no features that would require an earlier stage.
- With the exception of Hindustani, the descendants are limited to Southern Indo-Aryan and Western Indo-Aryan.
- Although the referent has a natural gender, the unmarked Marathi and Gujarati terms can also be neuter.
- Old Marathi 𑘚𑘳𑘎𑘨 n (ḍukara) is an Early New Indo-Aryan descendant.
- Compare Marwari डारौ (ḍārau) / 𑅠𑅭𑅒 m (ḍru /ḍārau/, “pig”), which has word-initial ḍ- and word-penultimate -r- but does not have any word-medial consonants.
