Učida states that the term was borrowed from Old Marathi 𑘚𑘳𑘎𑘨 (ḍukara).[1] However, since there exist Western Indo-Aryan cognates such as Gujarati ડુક્કર (ḍukkar) and Nimadi डुक्कर (ḍukkar), the term was probably inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *𑀟𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀭 (*ḍukkara). In any case, the etymology may be influenced by Sanskrit ꢱꢹꢒꢬ (sūkará).
