Prakrit

Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps from Sanskrit खद् (khad, to be steady, firm) (whence ख॒दति॑ (khadáti)), undergoing unexpected retroflexion; however, that root may be a back-formation from ख॒दि॒र (khadirá).[1] Sanskrit खडक (khaḍaka, bolt, post) is a Prakrit reborrowing.

    Adjective

*𑀔𑀟 (*khaḍa) (Devanagari *खड) (Proto-New Indo-Aryan)
