Etymology

    Uncertain.

    Considered to be a root of dubious origin, perhaps an ad hoc back-formation to explain the name of ख॒दि॒र (khadirá, the catechu tree), known for its hard wood.

    Turner connects the root with खडक (khaḍaka, bolt, pin), with these words possibly tracing back to the same unattested ancestor.
