Etymology

From അവൾ (avaḷ, she). When used as a suffix, it combines with the relative participle of a verb to form a personal noun.

Suffix

-അവൾ • (-avaḷ)

  1. she who; the woman who; the one (feminine) who...
    • Creates a feminine pronominal noun from a relative participle. Like its masculine counterpart, it can represent either the subject or the object of a sentence.

Syntactic Flexibility

The role of the person identified by -അവൾ depends on the sentence structure:

  • As Subject (The Doer):
  1. പാട്ടു പാടിയവൾ എന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാരിയാണ്.
    pāṭṭu pāṭiyavaḷ enṟe kūṭṭukāriyāṇŭ.
    The girl who sang (subject) the song is my friend.
    എല്ലാം അറിഞ്ഞവൾ ഒന്നും പറഞ്ഞില്ല.
    ellāṁ aṟiññavaḷ onnuṁ paṟaññilla.
    She who knew (subject) everything said nothing.
  • As Object (The Receiver):
  1. നീ വിളിച്ചവൾ വന്നില്ല.
    viḷiccavaḷ vannilla.
    The woman [that] you called (object) did not come.
    ഞാൻ കണ്ടവൾ സുന്ദരിയായിരുന്നു.
    ñāṉ kaṇṭavaḷ sundariyāyirunnu.
    The woman [that] I saw (object) was beautiful.
