Etymology
From അവൾ (avaḷ, “she”). When used as a suffix, it combines with the relative participle of a verb to form a personal noun.
Suffix
-അവൾ • (-avaḷ)
- she who; the woman who; the one (feminine) who...
- Creates a feminine pronominal noun from a relative participle. Like its masculine counterpart, it can represent either the subject or the object of a sentence.
Syntactic Flexibility
The role of the person identified by -അവൾ depends on the sentence structure:
- As Subject (The Doer):
- പാട്ടു പാടിയവൾ എന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാരിയാണ്.
- pāṭṭu pāṭiyavaḷ enṟe kūṭṭukāriyāṇŭ.
- The girl who sang (subject) the song is my friend.
- എല്ലാം അറിഞ്ഞവൾ ഒന്നും പറഞ്ഞില്ല.
- ellāṁ aṟiññavaḷ onnuṁ paṟaññilla.
- She who knew (subject) everything said nothing.
- As Object (The Receiver):
- നീ വിളിച്ചവൾ വന്നില്ല.
- nī viḷiccavaḷ vannilla.
- The woman [that] you called (object) did not come.
- ഞാൻ കണ്ടവൾ സുന്ദരിയായിരുന്നു.
- ñāṉ kaṇṭavaḷ sundariyāyirunnu.
- The woman [that] I saw (object) was beautiful.
