Etymology

From അവ (ava, those; they (neuter)). As a suffix, it converts a relative participle into a neuter plural pronominal noun.

Syntactic Roles

Similar to the singular form -അത്, it can function as either the subject or the object:

  • As Subject:
    പൊട്ടിപ്പോയവ മാറ്റി വെക്കുക.
    poṭṭippōyava māṟṟi vekkuka.
    Set aside the things that broke (subject).
  • As Object:
    നീ തന്നവ ഞാൻ സൂക്ഷിച്ചു വെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
    tannava ñāṉ sūkṣiccu vecciṭṭuṇṭŭ.
    I have carefully kept those which (the things) you gave.
