-чань

Pannonian Rusyn

Alternative forms

Etymology

Borrowed from Carpathian Rusyn -чан (-čan), a result of rebracketing, cognate with Belarusian -чанін (-čanin), Russian -ча́нин (-čánin) and Ukrainian -ча́нин (-čányn). Final () is due to influence from -ань (-anʹ).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈt͡ʃaɲ]
  • Rhymes: -aɲ
  • Hyphenation: чань

Suffix

-чань (-čanʹm pers (female equivalent -чанка)

  1. (productive) Forms masculine personal nouns, typically demonyms
Зомбор (Zombor, Sombor) + ‎-чань (-čanʹ) → ‎Зомборчань (Zomborčanʹ, person from Sombor)

Usage notes

  • This form with the soft sign is marked as the lemma form in newer dictionaries. However, in the plural, the soft-sign-less form (i.e. -чанох (-čanox) over -чаньох (-čanʹox)) is more common in actual written work. Both forms nonetheless share the nominative plural -чанє (-čanje).
