-чан

Pannonian Rusyn

Etymology

Borrowed from Carpathian Rusyn -чан (-čan), a result of rebracketing, cognate with Belarusian -чанін (-čanin), Russian -ча́нин (-čánin) and Ukrainian -ча́нин (-čányn).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈt͡ʃan]
  • Rhymes: -an
  • Hyphenation: чан

Suffix

-чан (-čanm pers (female equivalent -чанка)

  1. (productive) alternative form of -чань (-čanʹ)
Зомбор (Zombor, Sombor) + ‎-чан (-čan) → ‎Зомборчан (Zomborčan, person from Sombor)

Usage notes

  • -чань (-čanʹ) is marked as the lemma form in newer dictionaries. However, in the plural, this form (i.e. -чанох (-čanox) over -чаньох (-čanʹox)) is more common in actual written work. Both forms nonetheless share the nominative plural -чанє (-čanje).
