Etymology

    Denominal verb from Sanskrit *𑀰𑀾𑀢 (*śṛta, fallen), from 𑀰𑀿 (śṝ) +‎ -𑀢 (-ta), replacing the Sanskrit past participle 𑀰𑀻𑀭𑁆𑀡 (śīrṇa) from the same root.[1]

    In some senses, also the Middle Indo-Aryan continuation of Sanskrit 𑀲𑀤𑁆 (sad, to fall, sink), which may be a case of spontaneous retroflexion.
