𑀖𑀲𑀇

Prakrit

Alternative forms

  • 𑀖𑀺𑀲𑀇 (ghisaï)

Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit *घृषति (*ghṛṣati), from घर्ष॑ति (ghárṣati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *gʰárṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰáršati. Doublet of 𑀖𑀸𑀲𑀇 (ghāsaï).

Given the short vowel in this term and variable root vowel in descendants, the Sanskrit etymon must be a class 6 verb with the root grade *घृषति (*ghṛṣati), rather than the attested class 1 verb with guṇa grade घर्ष॑ति (ghárṣati).[1]

    Verb

𑀖𑀲𑀇 (ghasaï) (Devanagari घसइ, Kannada ಘಸಇ) (transitive) (attested in Māhārāṣṭrī) [2][3]

    1. to rub
