𐌕𐌖𐌓𐌔𐌕𐌉𐌀𐌊𐌀

Venetic

Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps in some way related to Venetic trostiaia.

  • Perhaps connected to Proto-Italic *torstos, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥stós, whence also perhaps Latin tostus.
  • Perhaps a Veneticization of an originally Etruscan name. The linguist Blanca María Prósper rejects this proposal, arguing that the element turs- appears in other common Venetic terms, such as tursanis. Therefore, according to Prósper, the name would in no way require "Veneticization." Moreover, Prósper suggests that it is unlikely that any hypothetical Veneticization would mandate the addition of an unproductive suffix associated with the past participle.
