對偶
- (rhetoric, Chinese linguistics) "Chinese antithesis" (where two phrases, clauses, or sentences of equal length and corresponding lexical category structure to reinforce, contrast, or complement each other in meaning and/or sound)
- 別以為對偶只適用於文言文,我也能寫下「他喜歡喧鬧的都市,我鍾情寧靜的鄉村。」 [MSC, trad.]
- Bié yǐwèi duì'ǒu zhǐ shìyòng yú wényánwén, wǒ yě néng xiěxià “tā xǐhuān xuānnào de dōushì, wǒ zhōngqíng níngjìng de xiāngcūn.” [Pinyin]
- Don't think that antithesis is only applicable in classical Chinese; I can also write: "He loves the bustling city; I prefer the tranquil countryside." (demonstrates modern antithesis through parallel structure and contrasting ideas such as "he/I", "bustling city/tranquil countryside")
别以为对偶只适用于文言文,我也能写下「他喜欢喧闹的都市,我钟情宁静的乡村。」 [MSC, simp.]
- (mathematics) dual
Usage notes
- (rhetoric): There are no forced rules of the halves forming coordination, so 打草驚蛇, 藕斷絲連 are belonged without this rule.
- (rhetoric): While both 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu) and 互文 (hùwén) are classical Chinese rhetorical devices involving parallelism, they differ structurally: 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu) emphasizes contrast or complementarity between two strictly parallel phrases , whereas 互文 (hùwén) relies on interdependence between phrases, where the full meaning must be synthesized across both parts. 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu) could be also 互文 (hùwén) if the content completes by mismatching corresponding words, such as 不以物喜,不以己悲: apart from both halves of the sentence, 不以物悲, 不以己喜 also obey the meaning.
- (rhetoric): 對聯 / 对联 (duìlián) is a practical literary form that applies 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu) as its core structural principle, which must satisfy the requirements of 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu) in rhythm, symmetry, and meaning, but is specifically used as an independent artistic composition (often displayed vertically on sides of doors or pillars). Not all 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu) phrases are 對聯 / 对联 (duìlián), but all 對聯 / 对联 (duìlián) inherently employ 對偶 / 对偶 (duì'ǒu). See English duilian for 對聯 / 对联 (duìlián) full definition.
