Etymology

Coined in the Meiji period[1] from Middle Chinese-derived roots, as a compound of (mei, closing one's eyes) +‎ (, to think, to contemplate).

First attested in the 1881 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, Philosophical Dictionary) compiled by 井上哲次郎 (Inoue Tetsujirō).[2]
