ნჵაჲჸსაჼ
Bats
Etymology
Uncertain. Compound of ნჵაჸიჰʼ (n'aʾihʼ, “outside, outdoors”) + სანი (sani, “door(s)”). The locative marker -ჰ̡ (-h̡) is often dropped due to word-final /ħ/ deletion rule.[1] When forming a three-syllable form, the vowel of the second syllable is reduced and metathesized into the first syllable, thereby actually forming a two-syllable form (for example ჺაბიკ (ʿabiḳ, “spoon”), ჺაჲბკევ (ʿaybḳev, “spoon.INS”)). During word formation, the form სანი (sani) may have lost the final stress characteristic of plural wordforms, which caused vowel reduction and nasalization (compare with ავშაჼ (avšã), ადმიაჼ (admiã), აკვაჼ (aḳvã), დუქაჼ (dukã), etc.).
- Desheriev (1953) compares the first part with Chechen неӏ (neˀ) and Ingush ниӏ (niˀ), and the second part with Russian се́ни (séni), which is rather doubtful.
- Nikolaev, Starostin (1994) believe that the form is derived from the oblique stem Proto-Nakh *nHaʔ- + *saᶰ, however, only derivatives (locative forms) of the first form have been preserved, and the second form was attested in dictionaries only in the second millennium.
