Etymology

From ਚਾਹਣਾ (cāhṇā, to want), ਚਾਹੁਣਾ (cāhuṇā, to want). Both a passive participle (in eastern Punjabi dialects) and an imperfective participle (in western Punjabi dialects) of ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ (cāhundā, [he] wants). The passive participle in western Punjabi dialects is usually nasalized as ਚਾਹੀਂਦਾ (cāhīndā). Cognate to Hindi चाहिए (cāhie).
